How Pregnancy Tests Detect Pregnancy
Pregnancy tests identify pregnancy by measuring hCG, a hormone that begins developing after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. This process usually happens between six and ten days after conception, so detectable hCG levels do not appear immediately.
Because of this delay, taking a pregnancy test too soon can increase the likelihood of a false-negative result. Even highly sensitive tests may not detect low levels of hCG in early pregnancy.
While some brands promote testing up to six days before a missed period, these early tests are considerably less accurate at that stage. Waiting until the day of your missed period (or shortly after) gives you the best chance of getting a reliable answer.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test?
If you have irregular cycles, it can be harder to know exactly when to test. In most cases, it’s best to wait about 4–5 days after you believe your period should have started. Since ovulation may not happen at the same time each month, this extra wait gives your body more time to produce detectable levels of hCG.
If your cycles are usually regular, the FDA recommends testing one to two weeks after a missed period for the most reliable results.
For the best accuracy, take the test first thing in the morning when hCG levels are most concentrated in your urine. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and avoid drinking large amounts of liquid beforehand, as this can dilute the hormone and affect your results.
Your Results
A negative result does not always mean you are not pregnant, especially if you tested early. If your test is negative, wait a few days and test again after your missed period. Your hCG levels may not have been high enough to be detected the first time.
If your period still has not arrived and pregnancy tests continue to come back negative, consider reaching out to your doctor to discuss possible reasons for the delay.
