The abortion pill (or medical abortion) is just one pregnancy option. However, since it is a medical procedure, you should understand the facts before deciding. Your health should always be the priority.

La Luz Women’s Center provides no-cost, confidential pre-abortion screenings. You’ll receive medical-grade pregnancy testing, a limited ultrasound, and pregnancy options education. We want all women with unplanned pregnancies to have the facts they need.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation, which means it may not work if you aren’t in your first trimester. Despite the name, it uses two drugs to end the pregnancy.

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, and misoprostol induces uterine contractions that expel the pregnancy from the body. With the abortion pill, you’ll always have abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

You could also experience other side effects, such as:

  • Nausea (with or without vomiting)
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea

Understanding abortion pill-related risks is crucial. Though these risks are rare, they could still occur and include:

  • Fever
  • Infection
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (which may require surgical treatment)
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the drugs don’t work)

Before any abortion procedure or method, you should always consult a medical provider with any questions or concerns. They can provide answers, conduct a physical exam, and discuss possible risks.

Not everyone is eligible for the abortion pill. Factors like taking certain steroid medicines or having kidney disease could disqualify you from taking these drugs. That’s why it’s vital to speak with your provider before deciding.
