Abortion is a significant medical decision, but it affects every woman differently. Ultimately, your abortion experience depends on your unique situation and individual pain tolerance.

Understanding Medical Abortion

During a medical abortion, two drugs terminate the pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, and misoprostol causes uterine contractions and expels the pregnancy tissue.

If you have a medical abortion, you will experience some degree of vaginal bleeding and abdominal cramping. These side effects can range from mild to severe.

You may also experience nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, headache, and diarrhea.

Though your chances of developing a risk are low, they are possible. Some women have:

  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Heavy, prolonged bleeding
  • Incomplete abortion (which may require surgical treatment)
  • An ongoing pregnancy (if the medications don’t work)

Is a Surgical Abortion Uncomfortable?

As with a medical abortion, a surgical abortion may be uncomfortable or painful, depending on your situation. This procedure also causes abdominal cramping and vaginal bleeding.

During a surgical abortion, medications, surgical instruments, or suctioning methods are used to terminate the pregnancy. The further along you are, the more complicated the procedure may be.

Risks associated with this procedure are possible but rare. You could experience:

  • Uterine perforation
  • Infection
  • Damage to the cervix
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
