Getting Clear Information About Your Pregnancy

In New Mexico, abortion is legal throughout pregnancy under current state law. However, the medical approach to abortion changes as a pregnancy progresses.

Regardless of which option you’re considering, understanding your pregnancy is an important first step. A limited ultrasound can determine how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, and whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing. These medical details can help you make an informed decision about your next steps.

La Luz Women’s Center offers no-cost ultrasounds to provide you with the medical details you need.

Parenting May Be More Possible Than You Think

If parenting feels out of reach because of financial concerns or life circumstances, know that support is available.

La Luz Women’s Center offers a home visiting program, where a trained team member meets with you in the comfort of your own home to provide parenting education, encouragement, and practical support—both during your pregnancy and after your baby arrives. Along the way, you can also receive essential items like baby clothing and diapers. We can also connect you with community organizations that provide medical care, counseling, spiritual support, and other helpful resources.

If housing is a concern, you can complete a Coordinated Housing Assessment at our center. These assessments are submitted to the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness to determine eligibility for available housing programs.

You don’t have to have everything figured out today. Many women find that learning about available resources changes what feels possible.

Adoption Is Another Path to Consider

If you don’t feel ready to parent, adoption is another option available during the second trimester. Adoption can provide your child with a stable future while giving you peace of mind. You will not be expected to pay for any costs throughout the adoption process.

Today’s adoption plans allow birth mothers to make many of the decisions throughout the process. Depending on your preferences, you may choose an open, semi-open, or closed adoption.

Open adoption means there is ongoing communication between the birth parents and the adoptive family. Semi-open adoption means contact is shared through a third party, and identifying information is kept private. Closed adoption means there is no contact, and the birth parents and adoptive family remain anonymous to each other.

If you’d like to learn more, we can answer your questions and connect you with trusted adoption agencies to better understand the process.
